Atlantic Songbook Session –

 

New York City-based drummer Diego Joaquin Ramirez was born and raised in Cork Ireland. He played his first gig on drum set with his fathers’ band at age 4 and by the time he was 17, Diego was performing regularly around Ireland and Europe.

 

He attended Berklee College Of Music, The Banff International Jazz Workshop & Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program. Diego was awarded the Berklee Vater Drum-Set award, the Cork City Arts Award, The TD Fellowship award and in 2017, he received the ASCAP Herb Alpert Jazz Composition award as well as being selected as one of three finalists of the DC Jazz Prix Competition with his group ‘SULA’.

 

Diego has studied with Ralph Peterson Jr, Terri Lyne Carrington, Nate Smith, Rodney Green, Jamey Haddad, Clarence Penn, and Tyshawn Sorey,

He has performed with Vijay Iyer, Oscar Stagnaro, Ralph Peterson Jr, Tia Fuller, Michael Legue, Cyrille Aimee, Jazzmeia Horn, Wayne Tucker, Charles Turner, Grace Kelly, Stacy Dillard, Nadia Washington, Greg Tardy, Theo Hill, Luques Curtis, Walt Weiskopf, Niwel Tsumbu, Brian Deady, Loah, and Liam O’Maonlai.

 

He has played at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Fest, Montreal Jazz Fest, SXSW, The Kennedy Center, The DC Jazz Fest, Barranquilla Jazz Fest, Umbria Jazz Fest, Body & Soul, Cork Jazz Fest, Minton’s Playhouse, Smoke, Smalls, Fat Cat, Zinc, Nublu, and Rockwood Music Hall.

 

This group he will be leading will feature some of Irelands best musicians playing a selection of originals, improvised grooves, and covers, drawing influences from jazz, hiphop, funk, and world music.
