Recently named the #1 Rising Star Trombonist in Downbeat’s annual critics poll and hailed by the New York Times as “ young trombonist of vision and composure”, few musicians have managed to navigate the richly varied avenues of New York City’s abundant music scene with the same passion and adaptability as trombonist and composer Ryan Keberle. Since moving to New York City from Spokane in 1999, Keberle’s diverse talents have earned him a place alongside a staggering array of legends, superstars, and up-and-coming innovators including David Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Maria Schneider.  Hip-hop and R&B superstars like Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Alicia Keys; Latin jazz leaders like Pedro Giraudo and Ivan Lins; indie rock ground-breakers such as Sufjan Stevens; or playing in the house band at Saturday Night Live, on the soundtrack of a Woody Allen film, or in the pit for a Tony-winning Broadway musical.

Keberle combines that wealth of influence and experience into a bold group sound with his piano-less quintet, Catharsis. Described by the Los Angeles Times as “a potent blend of cinematic sweep and lush, ear-grabbing melodies” Keberle presents Catharsis in a performance of their one-of-a-kind indie-jazz with songs rich in deep groove, melodic invention and group interaction. The primarily word-less vocals of Camila Meza mesh seamlessly with trombone, the trumpet of Mike Rodriguez, bass of Jorge Roeder, and drums of Eric Doob to create a lush sound filled with drama and intrigue. Repertoire will be selected from their recent record release on Greenleaf Music inspired by modern-day jazz and folkloric composers from South America. The band members of Catharsis bring an impressive wealth of experience playing an integral role in many of the top jazz and Latin jazz ensembles including the bands of Charlie Haden, Gary Burton, Julian Lage, Christian Scott, Paquito D’Rivera, and Gonzalo Rubulcaba.
